Sen. Sherrod Brown says he won’t run for the presidency

The Democratic presidential field will be at least one big name smaller than it might have been: Sen. Sherrod Brown says he has decided against running for the presidency.

“I will do everything I can to elect a Democratic President and a Democratic Senate in 2020. The best place for me to make that fight is in the United States Senate.”

This choice keeps Brown’s Senate seat safely Democratic, an important consideration as mounting evidence suggests a heightening possibility of impeachment for and/or prosecution of Donald Trump’s corrupt acts. It is also a correct evaluation of the state of the Democratic electorate and the growing urgency with which it is emphasizing female and minority candidates in order to bring Washington leadership more in line with the faces of the base itself. A good choice from Brown, who will remain a force for Senate Republicans to reckon with.
