Team Trump’s latest immigration ‘plan’ is dead on arrival—as are all the other ‘plans,’ apparently

As Trump meets with hard-line Republican senators to brief them on yet another hard-line White House immigration proposal, there appear to be approximately zero members of the House or Senate still thinking any credible immigration policy can be crafted at all, in the current environment.

It’s not just that Team Trump hasn’t been able to come to any compromise with Congress. Trump and his team of white nationalists keep sabotaging efforts by anyone else to come to a compromise, instead demanding that any legislation meet their requirement that legal immigration be curbed. Again, because racism.

Instead, the room was filled with people who opposed the Senate’s bipartisan Gang of Eight bill, with Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) conceding that the forthcoming proposal would be the “second-generation” of the conservative RAISE Act, which cut some legal immigration levels and drew heated Democratic criticism.

So that’s dead in the water. And the “bipartisan” version is dead in the water as well. While House Democrats are committed to pushing through a new bill protecting “Dreamer” immigrants—those who were brought to the United States as young children—there seems no circumstance in which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would allow that bill to come up for a vote in that chamber.

In short, there doesn’t seem to be any avenue forward, and no reason to expect that that will change so long as Trump, who campaigned in a xenophobic froth against immigrants in 2016 and is already rebooting the effort for his 2020 reelection campaign, is still scuttling around the place. There’s no compromise to be made with white nationalists bent on barring immigration in racism-premised efforts to “save” the nation’s supposed white “culture.”

Republicans could ignore Trump, push forward their own effort, and dare him to veto it. But they won’t. They won’t do squat, in fact; Mitch McConnell has been openly bragging about that.
